Truss Design
In this project our group had to built 2 working trusses. Truss 1 formed a triangle shape with three side lengths of 9.75in, 5.6in, and 5.6in. It also had three angle measurements of 29 degrees, 29 degrees, and 122 degrees to equal 180 degrees which makes a triangle. Truss 2 formed three triangles which two were put together to make a rectangle and the other triangle was on the end. The bottom length of 9.75 in. supported all three triangles and their weight. My group got to test how much force could be applied on the truss before it broke which then helped to calculate the efficiency.
Conclusion Questions
1. Failure occurred at the places it did because that is where the most force was applied in Newtons. On the first truss it was 32N of applied force at the failure and on the second truss it was 67N of applied force at the failure. The stress on both trusses was the main factor that pertained to the failure of the truss. Our truss failed at the member that our calculations revealed as undergoing the most stress.
2. If given the chance to redesign our truss, I would apply more glue at the failure points on the joints so it would be able to hold up stronger when the forces were applied. If these points were stronger, our design would be able to hold up better and we would be more successful in our testing for our truss.
